Standards for determining the number of teachers in primary and middle schools
The Education Department (Directorate of Primary Education) of Bihar State issued a special order on 27 January 2025, in which new standards have been presented for determining the number of teachers in primary and middle schools. According to this instruction, teachers will be recruited in each school according to the number of students.
🔹 Standard of number of teachers for primary schools (classes 1 to 5)
🔸 The number of teachers has been fixed according to the number of students:
- 01-120 students → 4 teachers
- 121-150 students → 5 teachers
- More than 150 students → 1 additional teacher per 40 (forty) students

Other guidelines:
- The post of 1 head teacher will be established in every primary school.
- Minimum matriculation + trained graduate degree will be mandatory for the appointment of teachers.
- Language teachers will be given preference for Urdu and Bengali medium schools.
- Normative number of teachers for middle schools (classes 1 to 8)
For classes 1 to 5
- 01-120 students → 4 teachers
- 121-150 students → 5 teachers
- More than 150 students → 1 additional teacher per 40 (forty) students
For classes 6 to 8
01-105 students → 4 subject teachers
- Science and Mathematics – 1
- Social Science – 1
- Hindi – 1
- English – 1
More than 105 students → 1 additional teacher for every 35 students
Other instructions:
- In schools where there are physical education teachers, 1 additional physical education teacher will be appointed.
- 1 post of principal will be approved in every school.
- The number of teachers according to the subject will be determined at the district level.
Follow the instructions and time limit
Update on the e-learning portal required:
- Education officers of all districts will have to ensure the update of the number of teachers of primary and middle schools on the portal by 31 January 2025.
- Information about the appointment of teachers and post-approval should be entered correctly on time.
